JEE Advanced 2025: Exam Guide, Syllabus, Eligibility & Preparation Tips

The Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced), also known as JEE Advanced, is a prestigious national-level entrance exam conducted by one of the IITs on rotation every year under the direction of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). It is the second phase of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) after JEE Main to get admission to IITs and other top engineering institutes or universities in India. The exam is highly recognized worldwide for its standard and quality.

Exam Pattern: JEE Advanced

The entire JEE Advanced 2024 exam was administered using computer-based testing, or CBT.

The exam has two papers that are divided into three subject parts each, and each part has four sections covering different numbers of questions.

  • Section 1 has four questions and contains a maximum of 12 marks.
  • Section 2 contains three questions totaling 12 marks.
  • Section 3 holds 6 questions each of 4 marks, for a total of 24 marks.
  • Section 4 consists of 4 questions with a maximum score of 12 marks.

The papers 1 and 2 of the exam have different patterns for each. Whereas Section 1, Section 2 and Section 3 papers have the same pattern: MCQ, MSQ and NNI, respectively.

  • Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ)
  • Multiple Select Question (MSQ)
  • Non-Negative Integer (NNI)

Section 4 of Paper 1 has matching list-based MCQs, whereas Section 4 of Paper 2 has paragraph-based numerical value questions.

Candidates who are willing to take admission in B.Arch. courses need to qualify the AAT exam also after clearing the JEE Advanced paper.

The Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) exam comprises five sections covering 16 questions with a total of 300 marks, and it is a pen-and-paper-based test. The sections of the exams are as mentioned.

  • Section A (Architectural Awareness) has four questions. Where one question will be of 30 marks and the rest will hold 10 marks each.
  • Section B (Geometrical Drawing) contains three questions, 20 marks each.
  • Section C (Three Dimensional Perception) consists of three questions; each question will be of 20 marks.
  • Section D (Imagination and Aesthetic Sensitivity) includes three questions of 20 marks each.
  • Section E (Freehand Drawing) consists of three 20-mark each questions.

Marking Scheme

The marking scheme of the papers are varied as per the category mentioned below

Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ)

  • Every correct answer or the most appropriate answer will be awarded with 3 marks.
  • For each wrong response, 1 mark will be subtracted.
  • If the applicant didn’t answer or mark the option, then no mark will be given.

Multiple Select Question (MSQ)

  • If all the correct options are chosen, then the answer will be awarded with 4 marks.

There are partial markings as well for the questions.

  • If all four options are correct, but only three options are selected, the answer will be awarded with 3 marks.
  • If three or more options are correct but only two options are chosen and both of them are correct, then the answer will be rewarded with 2 marks.
  • If two or more options are correct, but only one option is selected and it is correct, then one mark will be added or rewarded.
  • For each wrong response, two marks will be subtracted.
  • If the applicant didn’t answer or mark the option, then no mark will be given.

Non-Negative Integer (NNI)

  • No negative marking
  • If the correct answer or integer is mentioned, then it will be awarded 4 marks
  • For all other scenarios, there will be no marks given.

Matching list-based MCQs

  • If the applicant chooses the correct combination, then 3 marks will be awarded.
  • No marks will either be deducted or awarded if the question is left unanswered.
  • For every wrong answer selection, one mark will be deducted.

Paragraph-based numerical value questions

  • If the question will be answered with the correct numerical value, then three marks will be given.
  • For all other cases, such as unanswered questions, wrong answer and more, no mark will be awarded.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for the 2025 Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) are mentioned below. Candidates who wish to apply for JEE Advanced 2025 and secure their place in IIT for further studies need to fulfill each and every section of the criteria.

  • Candidates must rank among the top 2, 50,000 successful candidates (all categories combined) in the B.E./B.Tech. Paper (Paper I) of JEE (Main) 2025.
  • The following are the percentages of candidates from each category who will be shortlisted:

10% for GEN-EWS, 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, with the remaining 40.5% OPEN to all. Within each of these five categories, PwD candidates are eligible for 5% horizontal reservation.

Eligibility requirements for Indian nationals and OCI/PIO applicants who obtained their cards before March 4, 2021

JEE Main

  • A candidate must have taken physics, chemistry, and mathematics as foundational subjects in 2024 or 2025 when they first took the Class XII (or equivalent) exam.
  • JEE Advanced 2025 is not for the applicants who have taken their Class XII or equivalent qualification for the first time in 2023 or earlier, regardless of the number of subjects offered or attempted.

Eligibility requirements for foreign nationals and OCI/PIO candidates who received their cards on or after March 4, 2021

Foreign National Candidates:

  • Candidates will be classified as foreign nationals if they are not Indian citizens by birth or naturalization, but they are not OCI/PIO candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO cards prior to 04.03.2021.
  • Candidates who are foreign nationals can directly register for the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) 2025 test, provided they meet all the additional eligibility requirements listed below and they are not required to write JEE (Main) 2025.
  • In addition to the 2, 50,000 Indian national candidates who are eligible to take the JEE Advanced 2025 exam, all foreign national candidates will be considered for the same.
  • A maximum of 10% of the total seats in each course will be additional seats allotted to the foreign national candidates. These candidates are not eligible for reservation of seats under the GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD categories or sub-categories as specified. There are no additional seats or subcategories for women in the foreign national supernumerary seats.

OCI/PIO Candidates:

  • On February 3, 2023, the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, in Writ Petition (Civil), passed a decision that the applicants who have secured an OCI or PIO card before March 4, 2021, will be considered as an Indian national OPEN category. If these OCI or PIO candidates meet the requirements for the JEE Advanced 2025, they will be added to the Common Rank List, CRL-PwD list, and, if applicable, the female Supernumerary seats. The reservation benefits under the GEN-EWS, OBC (NCL), SC, or ST categories for seat distribution are not available to these OCI or PIO applicants.
  • Candidates who have studied or are currently studying in India or abroad at the 12th standard or equivalent qualification at the time of registration for the 2025 exam and who are not citizens of India (by birth or naturalization) (but not OCI or PIO candidates who have obtained an OCI or PIO card before 04.03.2021) must also meet all exam requirements.

Class 12th standards

By appearing in the Class XII (or equivalent) exam, it means that the Board announced the results for that year, regardless of whether the exam was held or not. Even if a candidate’s results are withheld, it will still be regarded as an appearance.

  • Applicant from that board who took the Class XII (or equivalent) exam in 2023 are also eligible to take the 2025 exam, as long as they meet all other eligibility requirements if the examination board for that board releases the results for the academic year 2022-2023 on or after September 21, 2023.

However, a candidate will not be eligible to take the JEE Advanced 2025 exam if the results of the examination board for the 12th level or equivalent qualification were announced before September 21, 2023, but the results of a specific candidate were withheld for any reason.

Age Limit

For the paper of JEE Advanced 2025, applicants must be born on October 1, 2000, or later. Candidates who are SC, ST, or PwD, there is a five-year age relaxation; i.e., they must have been born on or after October 1, 1995.

Number of Attempt

Aspirants who want to attempt the JEE Advanced can apply for the paper a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

JEE Advanced 2025

Examinations Considered as Equivalent to Class XII

  • The final examination of class 12th, conducted by any recognized central or state
  • Board, such as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi; Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi; and more.
  • Intermediate or 2-year pre-university examination conducted by any government-recognized board or university.
  • Final year examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy (NDA)
  • Candidate can have the passed certificates or documents of the Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.
  • The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) acknowledges any public school, board, or university exams in India or in a foreign country as equivalent examinations to the 12th board or standard Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination.
  • A 3-year diploma course accredited by the AICTE or a state board of technical education.
  • General Certificate Education (GCE) examination from London, Cambridge, or Sri Lanka at the Advanced (A) level.
  • Cambridge University’s High School Certificate Examination, or the International Baccalaureate Diploma, is administered by the International Baccalaureate Office in Geneva.
  • Applicants who have completed the 12th class examination or equivalent qualification outside India or from a board not specified above should provide a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) to the effect that the examination they have passed is equivalent to the 12th standard examination.
  • The candidate must have previously passed at least one public exam, either the board or pre-university examination if the 12th standard exam is not a public exam.

Earlier admission at IITs

  • Regardless of whether a candidate continued in the program or accepted an IIT seat by reporting “online” or at a “reporting center,” they should not have previously been admitted to an IIT under any academic program listed in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) Business Rules of 2024.
  • After enrolling in an IIT, candidates whose admission was revoked or canceled for any reason are also ineligible to take the JEE Advanced 2025 exam.
  • Applicants may take the 2025 JEE Advanced exam if they were admitted into an IIT preparatory program for the first time in 2024.
  • The exam is open to applicants who were assigned to an IIT through JoSAA but either failed to report “online,” withdrew prior to the final round of seat allocation, or had their seat cancelled for any other reason before the final round of seat allocation for IITs.

Documents Required

Candidates need to submit certain required documents as a part of the application process for the examination. Here is the list of some essential documents required during the registration process and further for the admission purpose.

  • Recent passport-size photograph.
  • A scanned signature is needed.
  • Valid Photo Identity Proof (i.e., Aadhar card, Pan card, passport, Voter ID, and more)
  • OCI, PIO Card, Foreign Passport or a Citizenship Certificate is required, especially for the applicants who fall under the foreign applicant category.
  • The 10th standard mark sheet or the birth certificate is required for the age-proof verification of the candidate. 
  • 12th standard or equivalent qualification mark sheet and more.

  • To prepare for the JEE Advanced examination, first aspirants need to understand and thoroughly read the syllabus. So that they will not confuse themselves with the vast sections of the subjects.

What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?
